Swell art Spaces

Originally an old maintenance and groundskeeper building, Swell was rennovated in early 2004 to create gallery spaces.  The floors and ceilings are solid concrete while the walls are constructed of cinderblocks, which coincidentally are also concrete.  This leads to creative solutions for hanging art.  The solid construction of the building means that Swell can take the abuse of any artist.  The day an artist knocks down a wall at Swell is the day we put up sheet rock.

Swell has three spaces in which to show art, The John Zinc Space, The Aqua Room and the Nameless Space.  The Nameless space is currently undergoing rennovations which will be completed soon.  In the meantime, here are pictures of our two larger gallery spaces.

The John Zinc Space

This is the John Zinc Space, named after the old gas furnace that still sits in one corner.  It is our largest gallery space measuring 23 feet long by 12 feet 9 inches wide.  The cielings are 9 feet 4 inches tall, perfect for large sculptures and suspended pieces.

The John Zinc Space

This is a view from the entrance to the John Zinc Space.  On the left hand side you can see the two windows that look into the space.  Also on that side is the famous aqua green garage door.

The John Zinc Space

This is yet another picture of the John Zinc Space, with Mr. Zinc himself sitting over in the right hand corner.  Towards the back are entrances to the Swell bathroom, the Office Space and our storage closet.  To the right is the entrance to the Aqua Space.

The Aqua Room

This is the Aqua Room, named for its brightly colored floors.  This color was replicated to match the original color of the floor, which had been badly damaged by the pesticides and chemical cleaners that had been previously housed in this room.  The space is 10 feet 4 inches by 12 feet 6 inches.  This space also has 9 foot 4 inch ceilings.  The Aqua Room is most suitable for smaller installations and wall art.  On the right side you can see the exit to Swell's Back Porch, the covered patio area which accomodates outdoor musical performances.

The Aqua Room
This is another view of the Aqua Room from the rear exit.  Currently this space houses works by Shelly Connolly of San Antonio and John Medina of Corpus Christi.
The Aqua Room

Here is another view from the Aqua Room, from the ground level.  Through the doorway you can see directly into the John Zinc Space.  That is of course if that bench hadn't been in the way.

John Zinc and the Namless Space

Finally, this is the rear wall to the John Zinc Space.  It is the largest wall at Swell.  The doorway in the rear leads to the Nameless Space, which will be called that until we come up with something better.  Currently this space is undergoing rennovations.  It is the smallest of the three spaces measuring at 13 feet 3 inches by 7 feet 8 inches with 9 foot 4 inch ceilings.  Also through that door is the main entrance to Swell artspace.
